Our Story:

A Legacy of Growth and Community

South Broadway has always been the heartbeat of Yonkers — a place where history, culture, and community meet. What began centuries ago as an ancient animal path evolved into a Native American trail, then a colonial roadway, and ultimately one of the city’s most important commercial corridors.

History of South Broadway, Yonkers: community and business

Today, South Broadway remains a vibrant mix of the old and the new. The corridor is lined with beloved local landmarks like the bronze Abraham Lincoln statue in Lincoln Memorial Park, community staples such as the Broadway Diner and Silvio’s Italian Restaurant, and century-old institutions like Flynn Memorial Homes and Hollywood Florist. Alongside these local icons, new businesses like Paleteria La Michoacana add fresh flavor to the street’s evolving story — proving that South Broadway continues to thrive as a hub of opportunity, culture, and connection.

Formally established as a key route in 1669, South Broadway became the primary throughway connecting Manhattan Island to the grand Philipse Manor.

What once took five hours by stagecoach in 1785 now takes just minutes — a testament to its enduring importance as the major gateway to Yonkers.
